Hello my friends! As you may (or may not) know, autism is very near and dear to my heart. My son, Drew, was diagnosed with autism one week after his second birthday. He has changed my life in an absolutely beautiful way. He has taught me so much - to be more kind, caring, empathetic and understanding. To see beauty in the most simple things. To slow down. To love deeper, love harder. He is the sweetest, most gentle and loving soul and has a smile and laugh that will instantly melt anyone's heart. We are so blessed to have him in our lives.
I am lucky enough to be able to capture Drew's beautiful little soul daily, but I believe all children have their own story to tell. A story that needs to be told. So when I heard of Spectrum Inspired, I knew this was for me. To be able to help tell the stories of other children on the spectrum is pretty amazing.
So, what is Spectrum Inspired?
The Mission: "Spectrum Inspired is a global community that connects, supports, and uplifts individuals and families touched by Autism Spectrum Disorders. In order to educate the general public, our team uses Lifestyle Photography to document a diverse group of children on the spectrum and their families across the globe in effort to normalize and destigmatize ASD. It is our mission to give families a platform to voice their struggles, celebrate their victories and share their story; all the while, removing the stigma and stereotypes of what is thought to be representative of Autism and show the world just how broad and beautiful the spectrum is".
Have you ever been afraid of a professional photography session because you were unsure of how your ASD child would handle it? Would he/she be comfortable in the environment where the session takes place? Is it going to be too bright, too cold, or the grass too itchy? Are they going to bolt or have a meltdown? Yeah, I get it. I've had those exact same thoughts, too. I've been in that situation, too. About 18 months ago we scheduled a professional family session in Minnesota. We drove quite aways to the session. I had the perfect outfits. It was the perfect evening. The most beautiful light and location. But it was an unfamiliar place. And Drew cried/screamed through the entire thing. The ENTIRE session. There was no saving it. It wasn't fun for anyone. I knew I didn't want to put him through that again.
But great news... your Spectrum Inspired session can take place in the comfort of your own home! Or somewhere that is comfortable and relaxing for you child. This is all about them. <3
